Here’s your Home Building 101 Checklist to help you understand what to expect every step of the way.

Step 1: Choose Your Community and Homesite

Your home’s location sets the foundation for everything else. Start by exploring our carefully selected communities across the Kansas City metro area, including the Northland, Olathe, and Lee’s Summit.

Checklist:

  • Research school districts, amenities, and commute times.
  • Ask about HOA fees and future developments
  • Walk the community to get a feel for the neighborhood.
  • Ask about available lots — look for walk-out or treed options for added value and privacy!
  • Need guidance on choosing a lot?  We can help you choose the perfect lot for the style of home you are planning to build.  We also offer test digs to ensure minimal surprises when we break ground.

Step 2: Select Your Floor Plan

Next, choose the floor plan that best fits your lifestyle. At Elevate Design + Build, we offer a curated collection of modern, functional floor plans — from reverse 1.5 stories to two-story designs — all featuring open layouts, spacious kitchens, and elevated details.

Checklist:

  • Consider how you live day to day: Do you need a home office? A main-level primary suite?
  • Tour our model homes to visualize layouts and flow.
  • Sit down with our team and review available structural options – Our floorplans are customizable.  Choose from several structural layouts for areas like the kitchen or primary bath suite.  Choose additional options such as sunroom, expanded butler’s pantry, home office on main level, laundry off primary closet, etc.).
  • Confirm your selections with our team before moving forward.

Step 3: Personalize Your Home

This is where your vision truly comes to life!vWork one-on-one with our design specialists to select finishes, fixtures, and materials that reflect your personal style. From flooring and lighting to cabinetry and countertops — every detail is yours to define.

Checklist:

  • Bring inspiration photos or Pinterest boards.
  • Think about long-term style and functionality.
  • Ask about current design trends and what adds lasting value.
  • Review all selections before final approval and sign off.

Step 4: Construction Begins – Watch It Come to Life

Once all selections are made and confirmed and permits are finalized, construction begins! This is the stage where your home takes shape, and you’ll start to see your choices come to life.

Checklist:

  • Attend the Pre-construction meeting to confirm all details and meet your project manager
  • Watch for weekly Friday updates from your project manager
  • Attend scheduled visit to your home site at key milestones (Dig Day, Stud Signing, Pre Drywall, New Home Orientation)
  • Always schedule additional visits with your project manager
  • Ask questions — we love walking you through the process.  Your project manager can guide you and answer questions you might have during the build of your new home.
  • Celebrate the big moments (Dig day and stud signing day are milestones worth sharing!).

Step 5: New Home Orientation + Closing

As your home nears completion, we’ll schedule a New Home Orientation with the Warranty Manager and your Project Manager to review all features, demonstrate systems, and ensure everything meets our standards of excellence.

Checklist:

  • Take notes during your walkthrough. Ask lots of questions.
  • Learn how to operate key home systems (HVAC, appliances, etc.).
  • Locate breaker box
  • Review warranty information and all user guides.
  • Prepare for closing day — and get ready to move into your brand-new home!

Step 6: Move In + Make It Yours

It’s time to start the best part — living in your new home!vAt Elevate, we love seeing how homeowners personalize their spaces and begin creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Checklist:

  • Complete change of address with USPS
  • Schedule the movers and utilities. Plan for your first night in your new home, make sure you have toilet paper and cleaning supplies.
  • Add finishing touches like window treatments and décor. Check your warranty book for our list of trusted trades and discounted offers.
  • Get to know your neighbors and explore your new community.
  • Celebrate!  Your Dream Home is Finally Yours!
